Buy French language CDs or tapes and other audio materials. Listen to them as if there is a teacher requiring you to do so. A French music can be your background track as you take your French language self study course. French lyrics are not to be easily understood, but it is the musical note that will set your subconscious to a French mood. Watch a French movie. Read the English subtitles, your mind works double time connecting the spoken French to the written English and also tries to grab the accent and tone of the French language.
Watch French shows and hear French on radio. You might be annoyed, you might be frustrated, but just take them as listening pleasures to familiarize yourself with the French speech special rhythm.
5. Strive to understand written French. Unlike Chinese or Japanese, you do not have to learn writing some special characters for the French language. You just have to learn the correct spelling, punctuation, gender placement, and grammar.
With the aid of a reliable dictionary, write a list of themed French words and flashcards. Write labels in French for the things found inside a home: table, chairs, bed, dog, cat, books, rooms, appliances, and any thing else.
You are your own teacher in your French language self study course. Compile the listed words and make it a review material from time to time as you subject yourself to a self-exam. Write in French in a scrapbook. Have a French pen pal and exchange correspondences. In taking your French language self study course, you are on your own but you are not alone.
